Fueled by dreams of robots and rockets, Bal’s work spans high-speed physical computing, millimeter-wave CMOS circuits, and machine learning. His research has been published in Nature, Nature Electronics, and Nature Communications, with granted and pending patents on wideband microwave beamforming chips and neural networks.
He received his PhD from Cornell, where his invention of the Microwave Neural Network (MNN) was recognized with the 2026 Best PhD Thesis Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also a Knight Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscale Science and is an Ignite Fellow for New Ventures at Cornell.
Bal received master’s degrees in both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. Prior to Cornell, he worked as a radio-frequency integrated circuit engineer at Texas Instruments and as a MEMS prototyping engineer at TDK InvenSense.
